Ode to the Belly Button Ring Fastener

Sing in me, oh Muse, and through me tell the story
Of the circular securing circle which secures a Navel Ring in place.
A small pebble with vast importance
A tiny ball with which much sport can be made of keeping naval jewelry in the flesh.
For too long thou has gone by unnoticed – used but never celebrated
Like the lion skin fastener of Hercules
A 37th street and 8th avenue purchase, your loose hold of your larger half suggests a loose moral of your purchaser, and looks tacky.
Thine absence hast hastened on much caterwauling and gnashing of teeth
Thine owner fears thou art lost on the subway platform of Chamber Street,
But hopes thou art tangled up in laundry.
Thy return will be greeted with tears and praise bounteous
With burnt offerings and epos and song
No longer wilt thou be ignored for the larger, flashy jewel that though securest and binds
No longer wilt thou be confused with a bead or earring
Return to thou repentant owner who weaves listless at her loom in your absence
Oh, to lose the securing implement of the belly button ring!
